Gil Avérous has been named Minister of Sports, Youth, and Community Life in the new government of Prime Minister Michel Barnier. The new French executive was unveiled on September 21 after a two-month period of political deadlock.
Avérous takes over as Minister of Sports from Amélie Oudéa-Castéra, who served in the successive governments of Prime Ministers Élisabeth Borne and Gabriel Attal from May 2022 to September 2024. In his new role, Avérous also replaces Nicole Belloubet, who was Minister of Education and Youth in Attal’s government, from whom he takes over the responsibilities for Youth.
Avérous is 51 years old and has served as mayor of Châteauroux, in central France, since 2014.
