Nike’s Vice President of Enterprise AI/ML Engineering, Jason Loveland, has announced his departure after a seven-and-a-half-year tenure.

Loveland joined Nike in February 2016 and rose through roles in engineering, analytics and machine learning before taking on the VP role in August 2021. In a LinkedIn post, he highlights achievements such as building Nike’s AI/ML engineering team, developing a world-class AI platform, integrating acquisitions like Celect, advancing smart footwear algorithms and leading the first fine‑tuned generative AI model unveiled at the Paris Olympics and on Air Max Day.

His departure follows the exit of Ron Faris, VP & GM of Nike Virtual Studios, and comes amid a broader restructuring – including layoffs within the technology division and a shift away from virtual experiences like RTFKT, which Nike acquired in 2021. While Nike has not disclosed an immediate successor or future direction for its AI initiatives, Loveland posts that he is “taking on a new challenge” with a forthcoming new company.

Loveland’s and Faris‘ departure might signal a shift in Nike’s AI strategy under CEO Elliott Hill, who is refocusing on core business.
