Tom Bignall’s exit from Nike’s innovation leadership – the fourth change in three years – raises fresh questions about strategic continuity as the brand’s stock slides more than 33 percent year-to-date.

Nike’s revolving door in its innovation function has turned again. Tom Bignall, the company’s Chief Innovation Officer (CIO), is departing to pursue creative and philanthropic interests, Nike confirmed on April 10, 2026 – less than ten months after stepping into the role.

Andy Caine, currently Nike’s Vice President and Creative Director for Sportswear, will succeed him starting April 12. Caine will report to Phil McCartney, whom CEO Elliott Hill appointed last year to the newly created position of Chief Innovation, Design, and Product Officer.

Bignall’s departure marks the fourth time Nike has changed the head of its innovation function in under three years, a run that began with the retirement of John Hoke. The pace of turnover in one of Nike’s most strategically sensitive roles is drawing scrutiny as the company faces mounting pressure to rebuild its product pipeline.

Bignall was promoted to the CIO position in June 2025 by Hill as part of a broader effort to accelerate product development and restore the brand’s innovation credibility. A three-decade Nike veteran, he played a central role in initiatives including the Breaking2 project – the brand’s sub-two-hour marathon attempt – and the development of the Vomero Premium running shoe.
