Robert Maxfield has announced he will step down as Chief Executive of the Professional Golfers’ Association (PGA) at the end of the year. Maxfield, who joined the association in 2006 and became CEO in 2017, has overseen a period of modernization, member engagement and international collaboration.

Maxfield’s departure marks the end of a transformative period for the PGA (UK & Ireland), during which the association enhanced its governance, expanded global partnerships and strengthened support for its 8,000 members.

The introduction of a members’ survey in 2017 served as a catalyst for many of the strategic projects that Maxfield subsequently launched with his team. The 2025 members’ survey demonstrated increased satisfaction levels, said the association in a statement.

During the Covid pandemic, his determination to help led to many initiatives, one of which was to deploy the PGA team to call all 8,000 members with offers of assistance and support. Webinars were launched regularly to help members through the pandemic’s challenges and a Covid support hub was created.

Maxfield also took a lead role in the development of the PGA World Alliance, which brought together PGAs from around the world to champion the interests of all members. This year, under his leadership, the association launched a comprehensive governance review, primarily to ensure a fair, transparent and open election for Board and Committee positions.

The PGA has also recently launched the PGA Business & Management Institute, Maxfield seeking to support members who move into management positions. The association is expected to begin its search for a new CEO shortly.
