Poc, the Swedish maker of protective gravity sports gear, and Volvo Cars will present a new safety technology from Ericsson to help avoid collisions between cars and cyclists at the International Ces (Consumer Electronics Show), which will take place in Las Vegas on Jan. 6-9. The new technology determines when the helmet-wearing cyclist and a Volvo driver are likely to crash into one another. The Poc helmet will need to connect to Volvo's cloud through a smartphone location-tracking app such as Strava, while the car will need to be one of the newer Volvos that already use radar and cameras to detect cyclists, with fully automatic emergency braking. Both road users will be warned if an imminent collision is calculated to be likely to occur. The Volvo driver will get a warning through the car's heads-up display, even if the cyclist is not visible – when, for instance, the cyclist is behind a bend or another vehicle, or during low visibility. The cyclist will be warned through a flashing light in the helmet.
