Polartec has launched a new synthetic insulation technology that should enable the development of what the company has described as the “first-ever breathable ‘puffy' garments.” The new technology, unlike down and existing synthetic insulation batting, features a highly stable layer allowing for more open and breathable fabrics to be used on the outer and inner layers of “puffy-style” garments. Classic puffy garments require “down-proof” or high-density woven layers, which act as a vapor barrier. They work well in static conditions but moisture gets trapped inside the garment during even minimal activity.
