Lululemon has announced the launch of plant-based nylon products made in partnership with San Diego-based sustainable materials company Geno. Two short-sleeve shirts are the first in a series and part of the activewear company’s commitment to making its business fully sustainable by 2030. Geno and Lululemon used biotechnology and fermentation to convert plant-based ingredients into the building blocks for nylon, which is typically made from petroleum derived from coal, natural gas or crude oil. Lululemon’s first two plant-based nylon products are the Nylon Metal Vent shirt for men and the Swiftly Tech Short Sleeve shirt for women, which became available last week. The short-sleeved shirts are made of 50 percent organically produced nylon, 40 percent recycled polyester and 3 percent elastane. The elastane content is 30 percent from plant-based raw materials.
