Quiksilver has announced that its recycling program in collaboration with Repreve has reached the 100 million-bottle milestone. The process starts with Repreve turning used plastic bottles into plastic flake. This is converted into Repreve chips, which are then melted before turning into yarn that acts similarly to conventional polyester. Since its start in 2012, around 3,500 tons of plastic have been recycled into jackets, boardshorts and other garments. Each Quiksilver x Repreve boardshort contains around 10 recycled bottles. Quiksilver has also announced that it will donate $10 to 5 Gyres for each Repreve boardshort sold on June 16, International Surf Day. 5 Gyres is a non-profit organization that promotes action against the global health crisis of plastic pollution. 5 Gyres, headquartered in Los Angeles, has been in a special consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council since 2017.
