Amazon has announced the launch of Amazon.co.za, its online marketplace in South Africa, available on desktop and mobile browsers or by downloading the Amazon Shopping App. Customers in South Africa can now shop from a selection of brands across 20 different product categories, such as sporting equipment, consumer electronics, toys and more.

In addition to international brands, the store will include local brands from independent South African sellers, said Amazon in a statement, reminding that more than 60 percent of the items its stores sell globally are from independent sellers, mostly from small- and medium-sized businesses.

Amazon.co.za offers access to 3,000 pickup points, returns within 30 days via home pickup and self-drop. Customer support is provided via phone, e-mail, and live chat. For products fulfilled by Amazon, the company is also offering free delivery on the first order, followed by free delivery for subsequent orders above R500 (about $27).

As part of the launch, Amazon has partnered with goGOGOgo, a Johannesburg-based non-profit organization, offering customers the opportunity to package eligible products in handmade gift bags. goGOGOgo is dedicated to building the skills and knowledge of grandmothers, locally known as GOGOs. The gift bags, made from recycled plastic and handsewn, support local businesses and income generation opportunities for GOGOs raising children. Over four million children in South Africa are being raised by GOGOs, said Amazon.
