Decathlon has broadened its BuyBack program to encompass all sports equipment in the UK, following the success of its initial launch focusing on unwanted bicycles. The initiative now covers fitness equipment, racket sports gear, camping essentials, and water sports items like kayaks and paddleboards. Customers can participate by completing a brief online assessment to initiate the return process for their unwanted items. Afterward, they can drop off the product at any Decathlon store in the UK to receive a voucher worth up to 40 percent of the item’s value.
Once returned, Decathlon will refurbish and resell the product, giving it a second chance at life. In addition to the BuyBack service, customers can also have their sports kits repaired in-store using genuine parts sourced from Decathlon’s extensive inventory of over 5,000 spare parts. This initiative aligns with Decathlon’s sustainability goals, aiming to foster a more circular economy for all its products. It follows the retailer’s rental initiative launched last year.
Chris Allen, Decathlon’s UK sustainability leader, commented: “At Decathlon, we’re committed to promoting sports participation in the most sustainable way possible. BuyBack enables individuals to unlock value from older or unused equipment and trade it for new or refurbished products. With the rising cost of living affecting our customers, we’re dedicated to ensuring everyone is equipped for play this summer, regardless of the weather.”
