Decathlon’s first European airport store extends its proximity-format strategy into travel retail, a channel sporting goods brands have largely left to duty-free and fashion specialists.

Decathlon has opened its first airport based store in Europe, taking a 150 square meter unit at Geneva Airport that opened July 1. The format departs from Decathlon’s large out of town stores in favor of the retailer’s smaller “city” concept, built around proximity to high traffic transit hubs rather than peripheral retail parks.

Why an airport, and why now

The move expands Decathlon’s presence in travel retail, a category where sporting goods retailers have historically played a limited role compared with duty free, fashion and food operators. For a retailer whose growth has increasingly relied on densifying its footprint in city centers and transit nodes rather than opening more big box stores, an airport lease extends that proximity strategy to a captive traveler base. Geneva was selected for its role as an international gateway serving a diverse passenger mix, according to Decathlon, and the airport is Switzerland’s second busiest.

Geneva is not Decathlon’s first move into transit adjacent retail. The group already runs compact urban format stores tied to commuter and tourist traffic, including a location in or near Berlin’s main station, smaller format stores at Paris rail stations, city center formats in London, and urban units in Madrid and Barcelona positioned around dense catchments and transport corridors. What is new at Geneva is the airport setting itself: a captive passenger base that has cleared security, time sensitive purchase needs, irregular and often overnight operating demands, and an assortment skewed toward luggage, outdoor gear and replacement items rather than everyday sports shopping.

If the concept performs, it could become a case study for how sporting goods retailers approach high traffic transport hubs.

What the store sells, and how fulfillment works

The assortment focuses on lightweight technical apparel, sun protection, water bottles, compact luggage and hiking electronics. It is built for immediate travel needs rather than full category depth. Behind the shop floor, the store operates 24/7 Click & Collect lockers linked to Decathlon Switzerland’s online catalog of almost 90,000 products, allowing travelers and airport staff to pick up online orders at any hour, independent of the store’s own opening times. That fulfillment layer matters more to the format’s economics than the square footage itself, given irregular flight schedules and overnight arrivals.
