New Era built its business on licensed team headwear, but its second London flagship puts it in competition with lifestyle and fashion brands for costly retail space.
New Era is set to strengthen its presence in central London after signing a long-term lease for a flagship location at 386 Oxford Street, a prominent site near Selfridges and Bond Street station. The sports and lifestyle brand will take over the multi-level property, adding a second flagship in the capital alongside its Carnaby Street store.
The opening extends a London retail network that already includes outlet locations at Wembley Park’s London Designer Outlet and The O2 in Greenwich. Founded in Buffalo, New York, in 1920, New Era has evolved from a specialist headwear manufacturer into a global brand known for the 59FIFTY cap and licensing partnerships spanning Major League Baseball, the NBA and the NFL.
The move comes as Oxford Street continues to attract international brands drawn to the area’s redevelopment and planned pedestrian-friendly upgrades. For New Era, the location offers visibility at one of Europe’s best-known shopping destinations while extending its retail footprint beyond sports merchandise into the broader lifestyle and streetwear market.
New Era’s move is the latest sign of sports brands competing for retail space once dominated by fashion and lifestyle names. Once largely associated with licensed team headwear, the company is competing for premium retail space alongside lifestyle and fashion brands, as sports-inspired streetwear gains ground as its own commercial category.
