Singer Rihanna wore Salomons as she performed a highly-anticipated set for the famous half-time show at the 2023 Super Bowl LVII. The distinctive red sneaker worn by the megastar is part of a November 2022 collaboration between fashion brand MM6 Maison Margiela and Salomon.
The MM6 Maison Margiela x Salomon collection consisted of two sneakers: The MM6 Maison Margiela x Salomon Cross Low, with a distinctly modern silhouette and unconventional built-in gaiter (as worn by Rhianna); and the more conventional looking MM6 Maison Margiela x Salomon Cross High, with a high-top silhouette and Salomon’s quicklace technology. The Maison Margiela x Salomon MM6 Capsule has been available in stores and online since Nov. 11, 2022. A pair of low-top sneakers is priced at $360, while the high-tops are priced at $415.
The collaboration is another example of gorpcore, where traditionally functional, utilitarian outdoor brands have been worn as fashion, with Salomons being the footwear emblem of the movement. The collection debuted at Milan Fashion Week, reflecting the increasing number of sporting brands using fashion week to showcase collections.
According to the Maison Margiela website, ”MM6 Maison Margiela x Salomon Cross High sneakers fuse a performance sensibility with a directional aesthetic.” It adds the collaboration, “speaks to the brands’ shared ethos of transitional design … Drawing inspiration from the everyday, the collection is a celebration of the unsung beauty of quotidian dressing; of the eclectic blur of clothes that pass us by on our city streets.”
