Rip Curl has apologized on Facebook for selling ski jackets made in North Korean factories where employees reportedly worked under “slave-like” conditions. The apology was issued after an investigation by Fairfax Media unveiled images of workers at the Taedonggang Clothing Factory, near Pyongyang, contracted to make some of the brand's 2015 winter range of clothing despite the items being labeled with a “Made in China” stamp. Sources from North Korea told the investigators that factory workers in North Korea work long hours for little or no pay and can be locked up in work camps if they refuse to do as they are told. Rip Curl blamed a subcontractor and said it had not been aware of the situation. The brand announced it has taken immediate steps to investigate and rectify the situation and disciplining the supplier for its breach of contract. It also promised it will increase its inspections and audits of suppliers.
