Samsung and Cheil Spain have collaborated in the creation of a special swim cap for blind Paralympic swimmers. The Blind Cap alerts swimmers when making a turn as they approach the wall of the pool. The Bluetooth-enabled cap vibrates when competitors are to flip. The Bluetooth device is connected to a smartphone app. The coach, or any person handling the smartphone, will tap the screen and a signal will be sent to the cap, which will vibrate to warn the swimmer that they need to make their turn. Up to now, swimmers got tapped on the head or back by a coach or official who indicated that they were close to the wall, a method that has been in use since the entry of blind swimming into the Paralympics. The Blind Cap is currently in the prototype phase and is not expected to be used in the upcoming Paralympic Games in Rio. Once completed, its developers hope it will also allow data to be collected about the swimmer's performance.
