São Paulo Alpargatas of Brazil has concluded a year of negotiations by buying a 60.17 percent stake in Alpargatas Argentina, giving it the largest footwear market share in Latin America. The deal should help the Argentinian company’s Topper brand, which already sells 33 percent of the footwear in that country. The Brazilian company licenses Topper and has many other brands including Havaianas. Alpargatas Argentina, founded in 1885, focuses mainly on sports and casual shoes. The Alpargatas firms had combined sales of $900 million last year and sold 250 million pairs of shoes.
