Several newspapers have reported that René Jäggi, a former chief executive of the Adidas group, was found badly injured from a shot wound outside the Bethesda hospital in Basel on Sept. 1. Jäggi was apparently rushed to the emergency service and is recovering. A report from Blick suggested that the incident may have been caused by a suicide attempt. Two weeks later, the newspaper published a statement from Jäggi's family's saying that he was recovering. The charismatic Swiss manager led Adidas in the turbulent period after the demise of Horst Dassler, from November 1987 until 1992, but he is most widely known in Switzerland as the president of FC Basel from 1996 to 2002, when he led the club into the Champions League. He was less successful at FC Kaiserslautern.
