Shimano has introduced a new totally integrated group set for electrical bikes that goes into operation when the rider is pedaling and cuts off when a speed of 25 km/h is reached. It is the second generation of STEPS, an acronym for the Shimano Total Electric Power System, which was first launched in 2010 with mixed results. The new system features three optional power support modes for the rider, lasting for distances ranging from 80 to 120 km. Its drive unit is one of the lightest in the market. The new STEPS can be integrated with Shimano's Di2 internal hub gears and with its E-tube application. In Europe, Shimano will introduce the new system in the German market through an exclusive collaboration with the Bike&Co and ZEG associations of bike dealers between next February and August. They will develop e-bikes with Shimano's new STEPS drive unit and offer them to consumers for test runs and for sale.
