Textile leaders Hyosung TNC and Lenzing Group have joined forces to launch a yoga-inspired fabric collection that combines high-performance stretch with eco-friendly materials, signaling a major shift toward bio-based solutions in activewear and athleisure.

Hyosung TNC, the world’s largest spandex producer, and Lenzing Group, renowned for its cellulosic fibers, have unveiled a sustainable yoga fabric collection which debuted at Performance Days Munich and Functional Fabric Fair Portland. The range blends Lenzing’s TENCEL™ and ECOVERO™ fibers, made with REFIBRA™ technology, and Hyosung’s regen™ BIO Spandex, partly derived from sugarcane, alongside 100% recycled regen Spandex and CREORA® Color+ elastane.

Bio-based spandex now rivals conventional elastane in durability

Developed with Hong Kong-based Pacific Textiles, the fabrics deliver the softness and stretch demanded by activewear brands while reducing carbon impact. This collaboration reflects a growing trend: performance apparel brands now expect sustainable materials to match or exceed conventional elastane in durability and comfort. Hyosung’s transition from corn- to sugarcane-based feedstock further cuts emissions and supports scalability, while Lenzing’s wood-based fibers add traceability and circularity.

Why it matters

For the sporting goods industry, this matters. Yoga and athleisure dominate global activewear growth, and consumers increasingly demand verified sustainability. Bio-based spandex paired with TENCEL™ enables brands to tell a “fully biobased comfort” story, strengthening eco-credentials and compliance with tightening EU regulations. Expect ripple effects across performance categories, from seamless apparel to compression wear, as collaborations like this set new benchmarks for low-carbon innovation.
