Steve Furniss is stepping down as team management director at Tyr Sport, the company he co-founded in 1985 and has worked for ever since. Furniss was an Olympic swimmer and set two world records before he embarked on a business career. Horst Dassler, then the owner of Adidas, hired him as a management trainee in 1976. The following year, Furniss moved to Arena USA, where he worked his way up to vice president of sales and marketing. Then came Tyr Sport, which he co-founded with Joseph DiLorenzo, a designer. Tyr focused on competitive swimwear with lively prints and swim training equipment. Its products found favor with notable swimmers and triathletes such as Katie Ledecky, Simone Manuel, Matt Grevers, Ryan Lochte, Mirinda Carfrae and Craig Alexander. Tyr claims to have become the second-largest brand of competitive swimwear in North America and its products are distributed in about 30 countries. Furniss has served on the board of the Sports and Fitness Industry Association (SFIA) and was on its executive committee back when the U.S. sporting goods industry organization was called the Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association (SGMA).
