Google is working with Samsung and Qualcomm on an Android variant that will combine augmented and virtual reality with AI.

Shahram Izadi, Vice President and General Manager of Android XR, introduced Google’s most recent move in smart eyewear at TED earlier this month. Readers might recall the demise, two years ago, of a previous endeavor – Google Glass.

Google has been working with Samsung and Qualcomm to develop both a variant of the Android operating system – one that would specialize in the optical worlds of augmented and virtual reality and combine it with AI – and devices that would run on it. This is the Android XR of Izadi’s job title. As Google defines it, the OS is designed for extended reality (XR), which “encompasses all technologies that blend the real and virtual worlds, including virtual reality, augmented reality, and mixed reality.”
