The Alpinestars Tech-Air airbag system has been honored at this year's Consumer Electronics Show (CES) Asia Innovation Awards, taking away the prize in the Wearables category. The Tech-Air, which is said to be the first self-contained street airbag system, can be used for any type of motorcycle or scooter. The airbag is fully housed within the jacket. No external sensors need to be installed on the motorcycle and no time is needed in setting up electronic pairing between rider and/or passenger and motorcycle, according to the product description. Thanks to the sensors being located close to the rider's body instead of on the bike, this airbag system can be used both on road and for off-road adventure touring, and is designed to be equally effective on all types of terrain. An algorithm is formulated to predict the rider's impact, ensuring the airbag is deployed before the rider hits an obstacle. This technology has been developed based on numerous crash tests in order to detect the various types of crashes and ensure the airbag is fully inflated before the rider suffers an impact. Alpinestars has launched two versions of the system so far: the Tech-Air Street (2014) and Tech-Air Race (2016). CES Asia took place in Shanghai on June 7-10.
