The Brazilian managers of ASICS, Adidas, Nike, New Balance and Puma are discussing the possible establishment of a new industry association in the country. It would not be the same as ABRIESP, another sporting goods industry association established in the country last year and run by Sergio Schildt. These initiatives are taking place while the Brazilian government is embarking on a new 4-year program to promote sports participation with a budget of nearly $800 million, more than four times what was being spent before. Orlando Silva, Brazilian Minister of Sports, and other Brazilian government officials visited the ISPO fair in Munich earlier this month and discussed possible cooperation, but reports about a so-called “Ispo Suramérica” show in Sao Paulo already for next year seem to be premature. ISPO has begun to work with the Brazilian sporting goods retailers, however, bringing over Alan Chung of Sport 100 from China and Ward Robertson of STAG from the UK to an industry summit there last year.
