The European Union has decided not to introduce a generalized ban on lead following a study on the advantages and drawbacks of using the metal in certain sports equipment such as fishing sinkers, ammunition and candlewicks. Denmark has a ban on lead sinkers since 2002. In the UK, lead shot weighing more than 0.06 grams is prohibited, as well as any sinkers that go below 1 ounce of water. Sweden has voluntary local prohibitions for the use of lead sinkers in certain rivers.
