The Hohenstein Institute in Bönnigheim, Germany, which opened an office in Hong Kong in December, is proposing two new textile products that could be useful for sports apparel. HP2G is a hybrid yarn that combines the benefits of synthetic fibers with those of wool, providing thermal insulation while wicking away sweat and drying quickly. It also resists pilling, so even an item worn over a long period of time still looks new. HP2G was developed at Hohenstein together with two German firms, Zwickauer Kammgarn and Helmut Peterseim Strickwaren. In a separate project conducted with Kelheim Fibers, Hohenstein researchers looked into ways of using newly developed multifunctional regenerated cellulose fibers in the form of a hydrophilic (=water-absorbing) fleece. These fibers can absorb very high amounts of water, and researchers wanted to use them to improve moisture management in garments.
