The members of the Ver.Di trade union of Leipzig, where Amazon Germany's most important distribution center is located, have voted with an overwhelming majority in favor of a strike, claiming that the wages paid by the retailer are too low. The issue is that Amazon Germany is not bound to any collective pay agreement and that wages at its distribution center are based on payments in the logistics industry, which are usually lower than in the retail and mail order sectors. The union has not set any dates for the strike, arguing that it still has to define when this would have the strongest impact, particularly on the company's customers. A spokesperson reportedly said that “it would be sort of stupid if we went on strike and no-one were aware of it.” Amazon Germany employs about 9,000 people in the country, of which about 2,000 in Leipzig.
