More than 1,000 companies operating in various sectors in the Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) region have managed to keep most of their workers on site, accommodating them in their factories or transporting them from hotels and other lodgings, to help avoid a shutdown of their operations due to the spreading Delta variant of Covid-19. With the death rate from the virus up to an average of 241 per day in the city of 10 million people, including 1.3 million factory workers, Vietnamese authorities have extended the closure of non-essential businesses and other social distancing measures through Sept. 15. The first measures were implemented about 70 days ago, shortly after the first cases were declared in late April.
