Waitt Co., a Omaha-based investment company, owner of a number of sports brands, has announced the acquisition of the Bobby Jones golf brand from W-Diamond Group. The agreement gives Waitt a long-term license for the exclusive use of the brand globally for apparel, golf equipment and related products. The terms of the operation were not disclosed. Waitt Co. already owns controlling shares in sports brands such as Prince, Ektelon, Battle Sports and Viking. The Bobby Jones brand will be operated by Jones Global Sports, a newly-formed Waitt affiliate, with Doug Williams, owner of W-Diamond Group, as a director and Andy Bell, formerly president of Bobby Jones, as chief executive. The global Bobby Jones license had been previously in the hands of the HMX Group, a New York-based company that took over the assets of the bankrupt Harmarx group in 2009. Bobby Jones was an American amateur golfer in the 1920s and 1930s who dominated top-level amateur competition. He is considered one of the greatest golfers in the history of the sport. He died in 1971.
