WebMap Technologies filed a patent infringement complaint against six defendants including Nike and Garmin in a federal court in Texas on Aug. 16. According to the complaint, all of the named defendants infringe on the plaintiff’s “Method and Apparatus for Collecting and Expressing Geographically Referenced Data” that was issued in 2004 and assigned jointly to the Cornell Research Foundation and the National Audubon Society. Prior to the suit, the assignees granted an exclusive worldwide license on the patent to WebMap. The plaintiff is seeking damages from all of the defendants “for at least six years of past infringement” plus costs and interest.
