Brazil, Germany and Spain will join the U.S.and France over the next three years as hosts of ESPN's X Games. Following a bidding process for the best new locations that began one year ago, ESPN selected Foz do Iguaçu, Munich and Aspen, Colorado, as additional sites for the action sports competition. ESPN said it wants to turn the X Games from a competition brand into an action sports lifestyle brand with relevance to contemporary youth around the world.
The choice of Foz do Iguaçu, located in the jungle near the famous waterfalls by the same name, is interesting because of its integration with nature and sustainability and because Brazilian youngsters are very much into action sports. It's one of the categories that we are focusing on in the Brazilian sporting goods market research report that we are about to deliver.
The X Games will thus be held six times a year at different venues – four in the summer and two in the winter – instead of the present two annual events in Los Angeles and in Tignes, France. Here is the schedule set for 2013:
Jan. 24-27 Aspen, Colorado
March 20-22 Tignes, France
April 18-21 Foz do Iguaçu
May 9-12 Barcelona
June 27-30 Munich
Aug. 1-4 Los Angeles
