According to The Australian Review, Billabong is considering the sale of West 49, the Canadian-based action sports retail chain it acquired in mid-2010 for about $93 million, to help refinance itself. Since the takeover, West 49 has been downsized from 138 mall stores to 70, not including six locations operating under Billabong's Amnesia and Element banners. The American edition of SGI, which covers American retailers, speculates that Zumiez, the American action sports retailer that took over Blue Tomato of Austria last year, may be a suitor for West 49, if the price is right. Zumiez was embroiled in a bidding war against Billabong for the chain three years ago. Zumiez then entered the Canadian market, setting up 22 of its own stores there.
