Hohenstein, a German provider of textile testing and a founding member of Oeko-Tex, announced the development of a new test method that is said to scientifically measure the support level of sports bras, an advancement from “previously subjective claim,” the company said. The new method creates reproducible, independent results without human influence, claims Hohenstein.
The new bra testing method classifies the amount of support that a bra can provide – high, medium, and low. A specially developed torso from Hohenstein’s 3D printing facility allows to test different cups and sizes. The breast is replicated using suitable materials and in customizable shapes. The test simulates the movement of the breast and analyzes it in all three movement directions: up/down, right/left, forwards/backwards. In addition, Hohenstein benchmarks the bra with other products on the market.
The neutral classification and benchmarking data are meant to help bra manufacturers and brands with product development, quality management and marketing claim verification. The results can also be used for point-of-sale marketing to end consumers, suggested Hohenstein. Although the focus is on sports bras, testing is not limited to this application, added the company.
