Peter Agnefjäll ran IKEA for four years and chaired grocery giant Ahold Delhaize. From Sept. 1, that record lands him the JD Sports Fashion chair, succeeding Darren Shapland, raising the question of what non-specialist governance brings to a sportswear group scaling internationally.
JD Sports Fashion has announced the appointment of Peter Agnefjäll as Chair of the Board, effective Sept. 1, 2026. He will succeed Darren Shapland, who has held the role of Interim Chair at the omni-channel sports and fashion retailer since the 2026 Annual General Meeting on July 21, 2026. Shapland will remain on the Board as an Independent Director.

Agnefjäll has extensive experience across global consumer and retail businesses, with roles in governance, strategy, international growth and consumer-led transformation. He spent almost two decades at IKEA Group, rising to President and CEO between 2013 and 2017. He subsequently served as Chair of multinational retail firm Ahold Delhaize from 2021 to 2025, after serving as Vice Chair and Non-Executive Director. He is currently Non-Executive Director of WPP and was a Member of the Board of Directors at Orkla from 2018 to 2026. Previous non-executive roles also include Deichmann and Wizz Air.
To welcome the new Chair of the Board, Darren Shapland said: “On behalf of the Board I am delighted to welcome Peter as Chair. He brings an exceptional combination of international retail leadership, Board experience and a proven track record of overseeing growth and transformation in complex global businesses.”
Agnefjäll said: “I am excited to be joining the Group and look forward to working with the Board and leadership team to leverage JD’s strengths, deepening its roots in international markets and affirming its position in a rapidly evolving retail landscape.”
