Shein, one of the world’s largest online fashion retailers, is looking at becoming an online marketplace, according to The Wall Street Journal. The move would likely mean Shein becomes a direct competitor for existing e-commerce sites such as Alibaba, AliExpress and Amazon Marketplace, expanding beyond selling its own apparel and allowing merchants to sell directly to customers.
Shein was founded in China in 2012, moved its headquarters to Singapore in 2021, and currently ships to more than 150 countries. Valued at $100 billion, it is already a rival to existing fast fashion brands, including H&M and Zara. The source further reports that Shein has started manufacturing in Turkey and has leased and operated warehouses in Poland in order to ship to customers in Western Europe.
