Timberland fell short of its 2006 goal of cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 50 percent in five years, but did manage to trim them by 38 percent in that time. It still plans to reach that goal – and beyond – by 2015. The company said that the economic recovery in 2010 affected its progress, with an increase in employee travel, and record high and low temperatures meant greater energy consumption. Timberland approaches sustainability three ways: by upgrading its facilities with efficient lighting and LEED standards, by purchasing renewable energy, and by reducing employee travel when possible. Last year its Climate Counts score increased to 86 from the 82 it had in 2009. It was the second-highest scorer among the 150 companies rated.
