Adidas will set up a production facility for shoes in Bangladesh on a not-for-profit basis, with the goal being €1 footwear. The shoes will go to people around the world who cannot afford them. Muhammad Yunus, the Bangladeshi winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, inspired the project and is working with Adidas on it. He came up with the concept of micro-loans to help the poor start their own businesses. Adidas cautions that the final cost of the shoes might be above €1. They’re slated to start production next year, but it has not yet been determined if they will display the Adidas name or three stripes. Adidas follows Otto Group, the mail order company, which has also agreed to work with Yunus on a new factory.
