First-quarter sales of sporting goods in Norway increased by 0.7 percent to 2.655 billion Norwegian kroner (€345.2m-$458.2m) when compared to the same period in 2012, according to Sportsbransjen, the sporting goods industry association in the country. The sales increase can mostly be attributed to the cold and sunny winter weather during March, which motivated many Norwegians to invest in new skis and other winter sports gear.

A year ago, Norway had experienced its mildest March ever, resulting in bike sales booming. This year, bike sales did not start until April, but then got up to speed. With so many bike enthusiasts in Norway, strong numbers are also expected during the second quarter.

Running is another growth driver in Norway, thanks to rising interest in the sport. Many organized races are reporting record participation and the sale of running shoes is on the rise. According to Sportsbransjen, 1.5 million pairs of running shoes were sold in Norway during 2012. This represented an increase of about 15 percent on 2011 and further growth is predicted again in 2013. Consumers are trending toward higher-quality shoes that help improve performance.
