Globetrotter inaugurated Europe’s largest outdoor superstore in Cologne last week, indicating that four other large stores will follow in Germany over the next few years. The Cologne store, the sixth one in the German retailer’s network, measures 7,000 square meters on four floors and employs about 100 persons. Besides the concept stores of Jack Wolfskin and The North Face, it has a 240-square-meter pool in the basement to test canoes and kayaks, a climbing wall, an ice chamber, a rain grotto and a travel bureau, ensuring a lively experience. It cost €15 million to remodel a former shopping center into this superstore, which expects to net sales of €25 million in the first year, contributing to a 25 sales increase for the company in 2006. Globetrotter raised its turnover by 18 percent last year to €118 million, but 45 percent of that came from mail order and internet sales in a proportion of one to four.
