Nike has agreed to pay $1.54 million to workers laid off from two subcontractors’ factories in Honduras in January 2009. Nike had offered vocational training for the workers, but previously argued that paying severance was the responsibility of its subcontractors. The $1.54 million is being called a worker relief fund, not severance. Several universities canceled or threatened to cancel licensing deals with Nike, and it also came under pressure from United Students Against Sweatshops. To help the former employees of the two factories, Vision Tex and Hugger de Honduras, Nike will provide the money, along with job training and health coverage for a year, or until they find new employment. The company will also prioritize the hiring of these workers for two years as new jobs become available.
