Part of the grassroots football campaign launched by Nike in accordance with the World Cup seems to have backfired after Jules Pipe, the mayor of Hackney, one of the poorest boroughs of London, demanded that the Swoosh pay reparations for using the borough’s name and logo without permission. Nike has released a small range of football products that bear Hackney’s 40-year-old symbol, a circular “H” surrounded by the words “London Borough of Hackney.” Pipe says he would use Nike’s cash compensation to fund the development of local sports activities and suggests that Nike donate sportswear to the children of Hackney. He is also asking for Nike’s assurance that the kit was ethically produced. Nike replied in a statement that it was discussing the matter with the borough and that it remained keen to reach a satisfactory solution for both parties.
