Allbirds has announced the launch of the M0.0NSHOT, which it claims is the “world’s first net zero carbon shoe.” The name refers to the company “shooting for the moon with a net zero carbon shoe,” Allbirds said. The midsole of the M0.0NSHOT consists of a newly-developed sugarcane-based foam that features 80 percent bio content. The shoe’s upper is made of regenerative Merino wool, grown at Lake Hawea Station in New Zealand. The final product will be packed in sugarcane-derived Green PE (which stands for bio-based polyethylene, produced from the renewable raw material of sugar cane) and will be sent out on biofuel-powered ships. The shoe boasts a 0.0 kg CO₂e carbon footprint versus the industry’s average per-produced shoe of 14 kg CO₂e. The M0.0NSHOT will first be shown at the Global Fashion Summit in Copenhagen in June and released in spring 2024.
