Eight months after announcing the new project of a climate-friendly running shoe in collaboration with Allbirds, Adidas has reported the planned launch on Dec. 15 of its Futurecraft.Footprint. With 2.94 kg of CO2 emissions per pair, Adidas describes the shoe as a personal best for both brands. The Futurecraft.Footprint is also one of the lightest performance shoes that Adidas and Allbirds have ever developed, resulting in further material savings by using only what is necessary while maintaining the integrity of the shoe’s performance, such as a carved-out midsole structure instead of a torsion bar.

FUTURECRAFT.FOOTPRINT

The Futurecraft.Footprint’s midsole is based on Adidas’ Lightstrike midsole, redesigned with Allbirds’ bio-based sugar cane to provide a low-carbon component made in part from natural materials. The redesigned upper is made with 77 percent recycled polyester and 23 percent natural wood-based Tencel. The outsole is made of 10 percent recycled rubber.

Adidas calls Futurecraft.Footprint a trigger project for systemic change: “We wanted to demonstrate how collaboration and an open-source mindset can create a halo effect across the industry and help make progress towards net zero.”

The shoe will be available with an initial limited drop starting Dec. 15 at a recommended retail price of €120 per pair on adidas.com, via the Adidas and Allbirds apps, and in select Adidas and Allbirds stores. A wider release with four new colorways will follow in spring 2022.
