UEFA and the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that aims to show how football and hosting UEFA events can support cities to become more sustainable. UNECE is one of the five regional commissions of the United Nations and works to promote pan-European economic integration amongst its 56 member states. The new cooperation agreement between UEFA and the UNECE will also seek to facilitate knowledge exchanges and promote safe and sustainable mobility in urban areas. The MoU will likewise aim to ensure that investment in events by partners and hosts contributes to cities becoming more sustainable. The signing of the MoU falls within the scope of UEFA’s own sustainability goals, as outlined in “UEFA’s Football Sustainability Strategy 2030” in December 2021. UEFA is currently in the process of creating its own sustainable event management system, which is meant to enable the measurement and benchmarking of event sustainability in football while providing transparent traceability of the impact of its events. UEFA’s sustainable event management system is expected to be operational by 2023.
