The US President’s tariff threat first raised trade tensions with the EU, but later was postponed after speaking with Ursula von der Leyen.
On May 23, 2025, US President Donald Trump announced plans to impose a 50 percent tariff on all imports from the European Union starting June 1, citing stalled trade negotiations. He stated that products manufactured in the US would be exempt from this tariff. In response, European Union Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič emphasized the EU’s commitment to fair negotiations and mutual respect. He affirmed the bloc’s readiness to defend its interests and highlighted ongoing discussions with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick.
During the weekend, The US President Donald Trump has postponed to July 9 from June 1 the deadline to introduce a 50 percent import tariff on goods from the European Union after speaking with Ursula von der Leyen, the president of the European Commission.
