A federal judge in Louisville, Kentucky ordered Skechers to pay $40 million as a settlement for 70 class-action suits brought by some 520,000 U.S. consumers against the company, alleging misleading claims about the physical benefits of its toning shoes. The consumers who bought the shoes between Aug. 1, 2008 and Aug. 13, 2012 will be entitled to receive compensations varying between $40 and $80 per pair, depending on the model. The two leading plaintiffs in the case, Tamara Grabowski and Venus Morga, were awarded $2,500 each. If any eligible consumers don't request repayments, Skechers will have to pay the corresponding amounts to the Federal Trade Commission. The company had already recorded a charge of $50 million for the case in its accounts for the fourth quarter of 2012.
