A Humboldt penguin at the Santa Barbara Zoo in California is getting some help from Teva. Lucky, the penguin, was born in April 2010 with a problem with one of his legs, causing him to have a shuffling gait. The zoo tried various remedies, including splints, but it still couldn't walk normally, and it developed sores on its foot when it was 2 months old from putting pressure on the wrong areas when it hopped. The zoo, worried about infection, called Teva, and designers were sent out to measure Lucky's foot and leg. In addition to size, the designers had to consider that the shoe needed to be lightweight and waterproof, and provide good traction. Through trial and error, Teva came up with the right shoe for Lucky, who now walks, hops, swims and plays like the other 17 penguins in its flock. Sarah Aspinall, a British children's book author, is writing a book about Lucky, coming out in the autumn, and all proceeds will go to help support the poor animal.
