Adidas could suffer a big blow after the announcement by Derrick Rose, one of the brand's superstars, that he would not play for the remainder of the 2013/14 season following surgery to repair a medial meniscus tear in his right knee at the end of November. The Chicago Bulls player already missed all of the last NBA season after tearing a ligament in his left knee in April 2012, during the play-off opener against Philadelphia. In the wake of Rose's injury last year, Adidas launched “The Return” campaign, documenting Rose's recovery as well as his rise from a rough neighborhood in South Side Chicago to stardom for the hometown team. Along with the basketball team itself, Adidas' campaign and investment could now take a hit. Rose signed a contract extension with the company in February 2012 that reportedly was worth $185 million to $260 million over 13 or 14 years. Two months later, Rose was injured and now, he is out again. In an apparently unrelated development after the accident, Nike announced a major campaign for the launch of a new range of basketball shoes co-signed with one of its sponsored NBA champions, Kobe Bryant.
