According to an article on the Indian news website Daily Sun, the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has appealed to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for support to achieve the country’s garment industry’s strategic vision of reaching $100 billion worth of garment exports by 2030. BGMEA president Faruque Hassan appealed to an IMF delegation led by IMF Bangladesh mission chief Rahul Anand, who paid him a courtesy call last week at the BGMEA’s PR office in Gulshan, Dhaka.

Hassan briefed the IMF delegation on the BGMEA’s renewed sustainable strategic vision 2030, which aims to pursue the growth of the textile and apparel industry in a sustainable manner that positively impacts the economy, the environment and people’s lives. He said the industry had set a goal of exporting $100 billion worth of apparel by 2030 while employing 6 million people in the apparel sector by ensuring 100 percent gender equality, inclusion and a decent workplace. Hassan asked the IMF to help realize the vision of the garment industry, which in turn would contribute to Bangladesh’s development.

The meeting also discussed the potential impact of Bangladesh’s graduation as an LDC (least developed country) in terms of tariff changes and market access, according to the Daily Sun.
