Colin Kaepernick has filed to trademark a black-and-white image of his face and hair. The former NFL player was recently revealed as one of the faces of Nike's 30th anniversary “Just Do It” campaign. The filing with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, which was made through the player's company, Inked Flash, is expected to be used across various products including shoes, backpacks, shampoo, jewelry, furniture and more, as well as for seminars and camps in the field of self-empowerment. In August of 2016, Kaepernick began kneeling during the U.S. national anthem at football games in protest of racial injustice. The former quarterback of San Francisco 49ers, who is now entering a second NFL season without a team, filed a collusion grievance against NFL owners last October, claiming that team owners have conspired to keep him out of the game. In August of this year, the league's request to dismiss his grievance was rejected and a trial hearing requiring testimony from NFL owners is expected to occur in the coming months.
