HanesBrands Inc, the owner of Champion, has released its 2022 Sustainability Summary Report, highlighting significant achievements in the areas of People, Planet and Product, and in creating more sustainable products. “HanesBrands continues to build on our leadership position in sustainability by improving the lives of people, protecting the planet and creating more sustainable products,” said Steve Bratspies, CEO of HanesBrands. “Our global associates are passionate about strengthening the communities where we live and work. I want to thank our teams around the world for their commitment to sustainability as we work together to achieve our ambitious goals.”

Highlights of HanesBrands’ progress in 2021 and 2022 were:

People Goal: Contribute to improving the lives of at least 10 million people through diversity and inclusion, workplace equity, health and wellness, education and community engagement.

Progress:

  • 2.7 million lives impacted through HanesBrands’ philanthropic initiatives and employee and community outreach programs
  • 8.5 million garments provided to people in need
  • 50 percent of senior management positions and above are held by women in the U.S.

Planet Goals: Set science-based goals to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, reduce energy and water use by 25%, transition to 100% renewable energy, and reduce landfill waste to zero.

Progress:

  • Reduce Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 30%; HanesBrands submitted emissions reduction targets under the Science-Based Target Initiative
  • 92 percent of waste is diverted from landfills
  • Nearly 50 percent of the electricity used comes from renewable sources

Product Goals: Use 100 percent recycled/biodegradable polyester and sustainably sourced cotton, reduce packaging weight by 25 percent, and eliminate single-use plastics (what is left must be universally recyclable or compostable).

Progress:

  • 70 percent of cotton used is sustainably sourced
  • Projects to reduce single-use plastic by 34 percent implemented
  • Projects to reduce packaging weight by 11 percent implemented

HanesBrands also announced the launch of its global sustainability campaign, “I’m In,” which encourages employees to make big changes through simple means. With 51,000 employees in 32 countries, the campaign aims to further strengthen HanesBrands’ impact on improving the environment and drive engagement among internal teams to create a more enjoyable world for all.
